Uzbekistan: Central Asian Fairytale offers a glimpse into the history, traditions, culture and everyday life of Uzbekistan. This exhibition will run from August 28 – October 28, 2017 in the Constance and Linton Grinter Gallery of International Art in Grinter Hall. There will be two accompanying lectures held in the University Gallery at noon on September 15 and October 20, 2017. The opening reception for this show will be held on September 1, 2017 at 6:30 pm.

Organized by Albina Hartner, a Fulbright Scholar and student at the University of Florida, this exhibition showcases the photography of Ernest Kurtveliev, one of Uzbekistan’s most widely recognized artists, alongside the colorful pottery and textiles of prominent Uzbek craftsmen. The show is organized to conicide with Uzbekistan’s Independence Day (September 1) and to allow the Gainesville community to learn about this beautiful country located in Central Asia in the midst of the ancient Great Silk Road and surrounded by China, Russia, and Iran.

“[Uzbekistan: Central Asian Fairytale] will serve as a tool to build a bridge between different cultures to let people better understand each other,” said Hartner, Fulbright Scholar, University of Florida, Gainesville, Florida. “The objective of the exhibition is to engage U.S. people in history, traditions, culture and everyday life in Uzbekistan, enabling them to better understand this part of the world, perhaps full of miracles and puzzles for Western world cultural perceptions.”

Two accompanying lectures will be held in conjunction with the exhibit. On September 15, 2017 at noon, Hartner will discuss the traditional architecture of Central Asia. On October 20, 2017 at noon, there will be a thematic masterclass of Uzbek folk-dance with a performance. Both of these lectures will be held in the University Gallery.

Constance and Linton Grinter Gallery of International Art presents student-curated exhibitions that feature international and multicultural artworks. This venue offers professionally organized exhibitions that allow students to learn about curation and exhibition design and visitors to view art and artifacts from across world cultures and time.
