New World School of the Arts (Miami)

Founded and directed by Dr. Welson Tremura in 2001, the University of Florida’s Brazilian Music Institute (BMI) program is sponsored by the College of the Arts, Center for Latin American Studies, and School of Music. The Brazilian Music Institute in 2020 aspires to continue building its outreach mission and collaboration with the NWSA students and faculty, as well as to engage our University of Florida students in a rich artistic and professional experience in South Florida. The BMI mission of promoting, recruiting and integrating artists, faculty, and students from the USA and Latin America has fashioned an innovative spirit in our artistic program that incorporates classical, jazz musicians, and culture specialists. The recent collaborations among UF and NWSA faculty and students continue to lead to a path of success and a training ground for musicians and artists from diverse backgrounds. Furthermore, the BMI educational component bridges our UF mission and commitment to higher learning grounded in solid musical and cultural experiences with a robust group of artists and faculty exploring various musical repertoires of Brazil and the USA. Combining classical, jazz, and folk styles of music each year, the BMI brings outstanding artists for a weeklong event designed to extend the experience and expand the possibilities of learning with a strong emphasis on building a training ground for a professional life in music. Through daily rehearsals and group lessons, the BMI offers a challenging and exciting atmosphere in addition to an aesthetically and socially rewarding activity for all participants. The Brazilian Music Institute is a genuine Brazilian musical experience in the United States.
