    Rowe Artist's Statement:

Strong, generational matriarchs characterize my family. As the only daughter of an only daughter, there is an expectation for me to fill that role after my mother. I embrace this prospect with reverence, if not a little trepidation. I craft masks that embody essence of my family members, whether they are blood-related or my surrogate family of friends. These costumes are documented in performances, photo shoots and videos that serve as reference material for 2D works, which often have a textile-aesthetic. The process of crafting these costumes and adornments connects me to traditional “women’s work” of the matriarchs; however, the fantastical theatricality of the performance often shrouds the dark absurdity of the narratives, which undermines common notions of femininity.
