SUMMARY:Excavating a Legacy: Dr. Kathleen Deagan
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Kathleen Deagan began her career as one of only a few women archaeologists. Despite the professional challenges that brought\, she pioneered historical archaeology techniques that are utilized worldwide. Since 1972\, she has excavated in St. Augustine\, Florida. Her work there led to one of her most significant achievements\, identifying Ft. Mose\, the first free Black community in what would later become the United States. Today\, after more than 50 years in the field\, she is a world-renowned scholar who continues to publish books and excavate historic sites. \n\n\n\nExcavating a Legacy was curated by Maile McCall\, in partial fulfillment of a Master of Arts in Museum Studies (UF). McCall worked with Dr. Gifford Waters (Collections Manager for Historical Archaeology\, Florida Museum of Natural History) and Lourdes Santamaría-Wheeler (Exhibits Director\, Smathers Libraries) to research and create the exhibit. It was designed by Katiana Bagué (Exhibits Associate\, Smathers Libraries) and Lourdes Santamaría-Wheeler. The exhibit features items from the Smathers Libraries\, excerpts from oral history interviews\, and artifacts from the Florida Museum of Natural History\, where Dr. Deagan was Curator of Historical Archaeology for 28 years. Exhibition highlights include 16th-\, 17th-\, and 18th-century archaeological artifacts\, several of Dr. Deagan’s numerous publications\, and personal letters and ephemera. \n\n\n\nThe exhibit is on view on the second floor of Marston Science Library from August 20\, 2026 through December 18\, 2026. The building is open to the public Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. except for university holidays and semester breaks. For exceptions and holidays view the building hours on the Libraries’ shared calendar. All exhibitions are open to the public and free of charge.

SUMMARY:Vico's Spiral: Half a Century of Artists' Books

Libby Focus Gallery from September 10 through December 2\, 2026  \n\n\n\nConstance and Linton Grinter Gallery from September 10 through November 12\, 2026. \n\n\n\nThe University Galleries at the University of Florida presents Vico’s Spiral: Half a Century of Artists’ Books curated by Robbin Ami Silverberg and Carole Naggar. The exhibition includes a thoughtful selection of historical and contemporary works\, referential documents and related memorabilia. Originating at the Center for Book Arts in New York in 2024 to celebrate its 50th anniversary\, the exhibition provides a unique opportunity to appreciate\, examine and reflect on the recent history of the artist’s book. It will be on view at the Gary R. Libby Focus Gallery from September 10 – December 2\, 2026 and at the Constance and Linton Grinter Gallery from September 10 – November 12\, 2026. \n\n\n\nThis rich history is covered by presenting a selection of fifty artists’ books\, each of them echoing the unique immanent hybridity of this centuries-old practice\, emblematic for fluently incorporating the contradictions and paradoxes between the new and the old\, the traditional and the experimental\, the radical and the conversative and the political and the aesthetics\, all within one’s own reach. \n\n\n\nThis international global survey presents a broad selection of artists\, including widely recognized artists such as Tauba Auerbach\, Bruno Munari\, John Lathan\, Bruce Nauman and Liliana Porter. According to curator Silverberg\, the exhibition was “curated using the rubric of Vico’s Spiral\, a nonlinear conception of history developed by Giambattista Vico (1668-1744)\, an Italian historian\, political philosopher and jurist credited with founding the philosophy of history. Vico argued that ‘distinct periods of history can have identical or similar general characteristics; therefore\, we can discuss them using an analogy’ and that history’s tendency ‘to repeat itself’ resembled the movement of a spiral or helix. Structured after Vico’s Spiral\, the exhibition pairs books created in different decades yet concerned with similar themes or questions.” \n\n\n\nA comprehensive and fully illustrated\, 256-page catalog was published to accompany the exhibition\, which includes curatorial introductions and thoughtful essays\, revisions of the artists’ books history\, theoretical debates\, a playful list of books defining the field and a well-informed look to the global reach of the practice. It will be available for purchase at UG’s main space for the duration of the exhibition. \n\n\n\nThe artists’ books and the referential documents will be shown at the Gary R. Libby Focus Gallery\, and the second part of the exhibition\, which is focused on various ephemera including posters\, flyers and postcards\, can be seen at the Constance and Linton Grinter Gallery. DESCRIPTION:Expiration Sun\, a solo exhibition by Katarina Jacobs\, MFA Painting ’28\, opens for viewing at the 4Most Gallery from Monday\, November 2 through Friday\, November 13. \n\n\n\nReception\n\n\n\nNovember 3\, 2026 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.\n\n\n\n“Expiration Sun is less interested in the spectacle of death than in what thinking about death can offer the living. My recent work comes from researching near-death experiences\, particularly in the recurring claim that these experiences can feel ‘more real than real.’ \n\n\n\n“The paintings move between the ideas of reality and ‘ultra reality\,’ where the physical world might be one part of life rather than its complete form. There may be no clear entrance or exit as the soul uses the body to experience life in the physical world. Experiencers often describe light\, energy\, boundaries\, encounters with other consciousnesses\, and permanently changed relationships with the mind and body\, resulting in profound changes in lifestyle and outlook. These recollections inspire the way I imagine space and construct the composition of my paintings seen within Expiration Sun. \n\n\n\n“The reduced attachment to material possessions often reported after near-death experiences is particularly important to this exhibition\, and it raises questions about what we assign value to during our lives. After all\, even our bodies are temporary. Like the sun\, we are extinguishable in form\, yet inextinguishable in essence” (Jacobs\, 2026).

SUMMARY:HESCAH Lecture | Dr. Jaleh Mansoor "Three Temporalities of the 1960’s Neo-Avant-Garde: Twombly’s Melancholia\, Warhol’s Mimesis\, Merz’s Portentous Futurism"
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Mansoor’s research on abstract painting in the context of the miracolo Italiano and the international relations of the Marshall Plan era nested within the global dynamics of the Cold War opens up on to problems concerning the labour-to-capital relationship and its ramifications in culture and aesthetics. Her work limns the correlation between real and aesthetic abstraction. While Marx\, in the introduction to The Grundrisse\, evoked aesthetic abstraction only to bracket it off from concrete abstraction in the realm of production\, circulation\, and consumption\, this talk traces the etiology of capitalist social dynamics symptomatized in aesthetic abstraction. The relationship among technology\, media\, and reification factors into this etiology\, but does not account for the social relations also indexed therein.

SUMMARY:Visiting Artist Lecture: Mariela Yeregui
DESCRIPTION:The School of Art + Art History presents the Visiting Artist Lecture Series. \n\n\n\nJoin us for an artist talk and Q&A with Mariela Yeregui on Tuesday\, November 10 at 6:00 p.m. in Fine Arts B (FAB) 105. \n\n\n\nMariela Yeregui is an Argentine artist\, researcher and educator; and a pioneering figure in the field of electronic and digital arts in Latin America. Since the late 1990s\, her practice has explored the relationships between technologies\, materialities\, bodies and social entanglements through installations\, interactive devices\, robotics\, electronic textiles\, moving images and participatory practices. \n\n\n\nHer work approaches technology from a critical perspective\, challenging technocratic imaginaries and dominant narratives of innovation. Grounded in situated practices\, her research seeks to dismantle\, reconfigure and reinvent the relationships between art and technology; opening up alternative modes of perception\, interaction and coexistence with the environment. Her projects investigate the sensory\, political and relational dimensions of technological practices; attending to their materialities\, tensions and poetic potentialities. \n\n\n\nYeregui’s work has been exhibited internationally in museums\, biennials and festivals across Latin America\, Europe and the United States. She has received numerous distinctions\, including the Henry Moore First Prize (2025)\, the Konex Award in Art and New Media\, the First Prize of the Argentine National Salon of Visual Arts and the BEEP Electronic Art Award. Her work is held in public and institutional collections\, including the Museo de Arte Moderno de Buenos Aires\, the RISD Museum\, Argentina’s National Art Collection\, the BEEP Collection in Spain and the Henry Moore collection. \n\n\n\nYeregui is a Professor in the Digital + Media Department at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD)\, and the founder and former director of the MA in Technology and Aesthetics of Electronic Arts at the Universidad Nacional de Tres de Febrero in Argentina. Her artistic practice intertwines research\, writing and teaching; embracing a transdisciplinary perspective that brings together material experimentation\, critical thinking and the collective production of knowledge.

SUMMARY:One Million Counterextinctions\, Stage 2\, City Assembly
DESCRIPTION:Rescheduled from Friday\, October 2\n\n\n\nJoin the SAAH and other community members on Friday\, November 13 at Depot Park on the Hill to imagine infrastructure that will allow species local to Alachua County to survive the climate conditions they will face in 2045. \n\n\n\nOne Million Counterextinctions is a multi-stage\, multi-year civic project led by Conrad Cheung\, Assistant Professor of 3D + Extended Media\, in partnership with Alachua County Commissioner Anna Prizzia and the Office of Resiliency. \n\n\n\nBy 2045\, rising heat\, saltwater intrusion\, habitat loss\, and seasonal disruption will push dozens of local species past thresholds they can’t come back from. The species our lives depend on have no say in how cities build infrastructure; this project proposes a city-level prototype for designing multispecies infrastructure as a public\, non-expert process. \n\n\n\nAt Depot Park\, attendees will be introduced to a local species and the specific climate scenario it faces by 2045\, and design a response by drawing or modeling a habitat\, system\, tool\, or something no one has imagined yet. No expertise is required\, and there are no single solutions; the event is free to the public\, open to all ages\, and attendees can drop in at any time. \n\n\n\nEvery design created is credited to its maker and enters a permanent\, open-source public archive at counterextinctions.com\, already home to more than 250 community-authored designs and counting\, free for anyone to build. The project’s first installations\, selected from that archive\, will be fabricated at functional scale and sited on public land across Gainesville\, where the species they were designed for will test them as real infrastructure.

SUMMARY:Living with Others: The Art and Ecology of a Multi-species Future | Program II
DESCRIPTION:Living with Others is a speaker series organized by Eury Kim\, Assistant Professor of Visual Communication Design\, with support from the Center for Humanities and the Public Sphere (CHPS)\, the Department of English\, and the Department of Gender\, Sexuality and Women’s Studies. The series aims to build ways of learning that go beyond aesthetic experience and demonstrate how art practices generate knowledge alongside traditional forms of humanities research. Programming will include artist talks and nature walks designed to engage students\, staff\, faculty and the broader Gainesville community with life that thrives on campus grounds. Activities will focus on caring for plants and animals in nearby swamps and wetlands\, including Lake Alice and the Harn Museum of Art. \n\n\n\nProgram II: Cornelius Tulloch and Arsimmer McCoy\n\n\n\nCornelius Tulloch is an interdisciplinary artist and architect based in Miami\, whose immersive installations explore the fusion of cultural identity\, memory\, nature\, and the built environment. Drawing on his Jamaican and African American heritage\, Tulloch highlights how Black communities in Southern Florida and the US have historically lived with wetlands. His work emphasizes listening and sensing as ways to learn from the environment.  \n\n\n\nArsimmer McCoy\, pronounced “Awe-summer\,” is a Miami native by way of Richmond Heights. McCoy is a mother\, griot and creative; a writer\, international poet\, educator\, creative programmer\, cultural worker and performance-collaborative artist. \n\n\n\nProgramming for Living with Others is made possible by our sponsors. DESCRIPTION:Members of the University of Florida carillon studio perform on the 61-bell cast bell carillon housed in Century Tower. Feel free to bring lawn chairs\, blankets (and even a light lunch!) while you enjoy the performance. Program details may be found near the base of the tower. The best listening locations are at least 100 feet away from the tower — if you can see the bells at the top of the tower\, you’ve found a great place!

Participants will explore how everyday sounds can tell powerful stories and connect people to different times\, places\, and communities. Activities include creating a collaborative soundscape and learning about tools for developing personal oral histories through sound. \n\n\n\nThe Future is Listening: Stories through Soundscapes is part of the Stories for Sustainability project.
