SUMMARY:Plural Domains: Selected Works from the Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation Collection
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition is presented simultaneously at UF’s University Galleries (September 14 – December 3\, 2021)\, Gary R. Libby Gallery (September 14 – February 26\, 2022)\, and the Harn Museum of Art (September 7\, 2021 – April 24\, 2022). UF University Galleries: Hours of Operation and Directions & Parking InfoHarn Museum of Art: Museum WebsiteSee below for info about special events related to this exhibition. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Plural Domains: Selected Works from the Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation Collection” reflects on both the multidisciplinary practices of Latin American contemporary art and on its diversity as a conceptual frame that is inclusive of a varied universe of voices. The exhibition comprises 31 established\, mid-career\, and emerging artists from Argentina\, Brazil\, Colombia\, Cuba\, Ecuador\, Guatemala\, Mexico\, Peru\, Uruguay\, and Venezuela\, and features works of art in multiple media\, including painting\, sculpture\, drawing\, photography\, video\, as well as large-scale multimedia installations. Having debuted at the Cuenca Biennial in 2018\, this is the first time this exhibition is presented at an arts institution in the United States. \n\n\n\nThe collection of the Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation is one of the most respected and well-known collections of contemporary Latin American art. The Foundation provides the artists with unparalleled possibilities by funding the production and exhibition of their works of art. CIFO features a collection of Latin American artists whose works are intellectually\, politically\, and aesthetically compelling for how they address the current shifts of existence and thinking in a global context. \n\n\n\nThe presentation of Plural Domains at the Harn was co-organized with Dulce Román\, Chief Curator and Curator of Modern Art at the Harn. This exhibition is made possible through the generous support of the CIFO Foundation\, Creative B\, the School of Art + Art History\, the University Galleries Exhibitions Fund\, UF Office of the Provost\, Fine\, Farkash and Parlapiano P.A.\, the Harn General Program Endowment\, Cal King\, Cox Communications\, Manny and Mercy Quiroga\, and Charles and June Allen.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n Claudia Martínez Garay\, ‘Sub America\,” 2019\, Acrylic on plywood\, 146 × 75’ (detail)\, photo courtesy the Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation and University Galleries.\n \n \n\n\n\n\nSpecial Events\n\n\n\nMuseum Nights Gallery Tour at the Harn Museum of Art: September 9\, 2021 from 7:30 pm to 9:30 p.m.Public Conversation with Ella Fontanals-Cisneros and Jesús Fuenmayor\, hosted by Dean Onye Ozuzu at the Harn Museum of Art: October 2\, 2021 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.Artist Lecture: Glexis Novoa at UF\, Little Hall\, Room 101: October 26\, 2021 from 6:15 p.m. to 8:15 p.m.Public Lecture – Residues and Relations: Thinking Identity at the Edge of Modernity\, Dr. Monica Amor (Associate Professor at Maryland Institute College of Art) at the Harn Museum of Art: November 4\, 2021 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.Gallery Talk with Jesús Fuenmayor at the Harn Museum of Art: November 13\, 2021 from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.Artist panel with José Falconi (moderator) Amalia Pica\, Alice Miceli\, José Gabriel Fernández at the Harn Museum of Art: February 24\, 2022 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.Museum Nights: Creative Domains at the Harn Museum of Art: March 10\, 2022 from 06:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. \n\n\n\n \n \n \n Amalia Pica\, ‘If These Walls Could Talk\,’ 2011\, Mixed media\, dimensions variable\, photo courtesy the Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation and University Galleries.

SUMMARY:hear my voice: MFA Candidates Exhibition I
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition Dates: March 18 through April 1\, 2022Opening Reception: March 18 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.Closing Reception: March 31 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.MFA Candidates Exhibition I artists: Kayla Burnett\, Angela DeCarlis\, Kobe Elixson\, Meghan Kozal\, and Lindsey Myers. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nhear my voice is not your typical exhibition presenting a culmination of a master fine arts candidate’s studies. Not for these artists. Especially not during this pivotal time in their career with a global pandemic raging in the background. Disrupted livelihoods\, personal health\, and connectivity between one another created an unfathomable experience. As a result\, many resorted to some strange form of forced isolation. Like the educational process\, curating this exhibition was equally affected. Conversations and studio visits were disjointed by distance and time\, but to their credit\, each artist remained steadfast in their pursuits finding enlightenment in the process of making and pushing.Presented in two parts\, hear my voice features unique groups of artists\, projects\, and works. Each component unveils a remarkable series of commonalities among their presentations\, how they approach their work\, and how they speak to one another. There is much to explore in this exhibition. First is a variety of media ranging from painting and sculpture to installation and performance\, and second\, the various perspectives on the profoundly introspective world and simultaneous yearning to communicate with audiences.Truth\, politics\, and society run dominant throughout the artists’ works in part one. What may seem like dark territory also reflects a unique light and problem-solving notion to each artist’s project. Many works are direct in their message and offer opportunities to examine and interact with their intentions. Here\, the artist’s voice is less about me but more about us—how we collectively come to terms with facets of humanity such as anonymity\, homelessness\, equity\, faith\, and care for all people.– Jeremy Mikoljczak\, Guest Curator

SUMMARY:"Analyzing dance moves across cultures using AI-driven movement classification" presented by Angelos Barmpoutis\, Qudus Onikeku\, and Wenbin Guo
DESCRIPTION:In this presentation\, an interdisciplinary team from from the Digital Worlds Institute\, the Center for Arts in Medicine\, and the Center for the Arts\, Migration\, and Entrepreneurship will present the results of the project “AI-driven Movement Classification and Analysis across Clinical and Cultural Applications” funded by the UF 2020 AI Catalyst Seed fund.Human movement has been studied in multiple disciplines\, including health sciences (biomechanics\, kinesiology\, neurology\, sports medicine) and the Arts (theater and dance\, cultural studies) as well as their intersection (arts in medicine\, dance therapy)\, resulting in a large but disparate assortment of multi-modal datasets\, including video\, skeletal motion capture\, manual annotations\, and clinical metadata. Traditional data collection processes often include Laban movement analysis\, a standardized form of human movement annotation that parameterizes the observed motion changes in a pre-defined 4-dimensional feature space (effort\, space\, shape\, body timing/phrasing). Such analysis requires lengthy manual input from professionals who annotate the recorded data through a time-consuming “watch and pause” process\, which is also prone to human errors. In this project\, we propose to use AI to fully automate the annotation process involved in Laban analysis by using deep learning algorithms on existing human motion datasets of video and skeletal sequences. The trained model will then be tested in Laban-annotating existing video and skeletal sequences and validated by arts in medicine practitioners and experts in Laban analysis. This AI-driven project will have a significant impact as it will enable automated classification and understanding of human motion across a spectrum of movement-centered disciplines\, including clinical and telehealth settings\, orthopedic centers\, choreographic practice\, and cross-cultural movement analysis.

SUMMARY:Concert ft. Weedie Braimah + HOT\, Cortadito\, and Maca Reggae Samba
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Afro Roots Fest 2022 – a series of workshops and concerts around Gainesville. This concert features Weedie Braimah + HOT\, Cortadito\, and Maca Reggae Samba.A Djembist\, Composer\, Producer and Folklorist of the highest caliber\, Braimah has an almost insatiable knack to draw entire audiences into his groove\, zigzagging through Africa on a breathtaking rhythmic roller coaster. His sound is the new voice of Djembe Music around the world.Braimah comes from a long lineage of drummers including his mother\, Ann Morris\, a respected jazz drummer and his father\, Oscar Sulley Braimah\, a world-renowned composer and master drummer. Braimah has been a performer\, teacher and preserver of African culture for over 30years and continues to peruse new musical crossings every day. He also leads his own band\, Weedie Braimah & The Hands of Time\, where he mounts the Djembe as the frontage presenting music of the diaspora. His band has appeared in Europe\, Cuba\, Dubai and the United States to name a few. Braimah’s debut album was also featured in Times Magazine as one of the top 10 albums of 2021Jose Elias founded the band alongside Julio Cesar Rodriguez Delet from Santiago de Cuba in November of 2011 after a 12-year stint with Conjunto Progreso that garnered him a Grammy nomination for his participation in the album Masters of Cuban Son. The duo was an instant success and were invited to perform at the Fingerlakes Grassroots festival in Trumansberg\, NY. They released their first CD titled Abriendo Caminos in 2012\, which featured one original composition by each of the artists “Delicias Caribeña” (Elias) and “Te Lo Perdiste” (Delet).Created in Salvador\, Bahia and after twelve years of playing the Brazilian scene\, Macaxeira Roots enters a new phase of exploration. This movement is influenced by Jamaican reggae with the purest expressions of samba\, a Brazilian rhythm created by African descendants of the Portuguese colony\, Brazil. With this new work\, a new rhythm is born: reggae samba\, offering the public a new expressive possibility where the only rule is nobody can stand still. This rhythm brings movement not only to the stage\, but to the public as well\, lots of dancing.See you there!
