SUMMARY:Call to Artists: Center for Arts in Medicine Inaugural Art Showcase
DESCRIPTION:The University of Florida’s Center for Arts in Medicine is inviting UF students and alumni to submit original artwork for its first-ever Student Art Showcase\, celebrating the many ways creativity intersects with health and well-being. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition\, themed “Arts in Health\,” will be on display in the Reitz Union Gallery throughout the Spring 2027 semester. Artists are encouraged to interpret the theme in whatever way is most meaningful to them\, with submissions welcomed across all artistic disciplines. \n\n\n\nThe showcase is open to all current UF students and alumni\, regardless of major or artistic background. There is no limit to the number of pieces an artist may submit. The Center is seeking work in a wide range of creative modalities\, including: \n\n\n\n\nVisual art (painting\, photography\, sculpture\, and more)\n\n\n\nDigital art\n\n\n\nMusic\n\n\n\nDance\n\n\n\nTheater\n\n\n\nPoetry and creative writing\n\n\n\nOther artistic disciplines\n\n\n\n\nIn addition to the gallery exhibition\, artists whose submissions are performance-based (including music\, dance\, theater\, and spoken word) may be selected to perform during a live showcase event in late January 2027 at the Reitz Union Auditorium. Performances may also be recorded and incorporated into the exhibition. \n\n\n\nArtists are invited to include an artist statement describing the inspiration\, process\, or meaning behind their work. SUMMARY:a river of all my lost loved ones
DESCRIPTION:Opening Public Performance on August 28\, 2026 from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. \n\n\n\nOver the summer\, workshops with children in the Hippodrome’s programs asked them to draw and write about what it feels like to feel safe\, what they wish the world could see about them\, what they carry that is too heavy to explain\, and more. They produced over 600 drawings. \n\n\n\na river full of all my lost loved ones\, a new public project by Conrad Cheung (Assistant Professor of 3D + Extended Media) converts the Hippodrome’s six monumental columns into 26-foot-tall scenes that combine and transform children’s drawings: crowded waiting rooms that open onto vast landscapes\, patterns that tilt into tightropes that characters ride\, a tower that stands in a moat full of unlikely loungers. Portions of the scenes are printed in thermochromic ink\, which disappears as the heat of the day arrives and returns as the air cools. \n\n\n\nTitled after a line written on the back of one child’s drawing\, a river full of all my lost loved ones opens on August 28\, 2026\, with a musical performance developed with composer Colin Self and performed live by Nailah Clarke\, Quil Darling\, Ang DeCarlis\, Phia Derias\, Robert Edmondson\, Mattia Imponenti\, Bionca Darby Kleinberg\, Madi Moyer\, Luke Sechrest\, Tom Smith and Abe Sulin.

DESCRIPTION:Opening Reception: September 10\, 2026 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. \n\n\n\nThe Gary R. Libby University Gallery presents “Transmitted Futures: bytes not boxes — Solarpunk\, Cofuturisms and other everyday tomorrows” curated by Flounder Lee\, Visiting Professor of Studio Art at UF’s School of Art and Art History. Lee draws upon “many\, sometimes conflicting\, ways of imagining what comes next” to suggest that futures are always multiple\, negotiated and made through everyday life.  \n\n\n\nThe exhibition brings together a range of visions for everyday life in possible futures: a coastline heard through headphones\, two video game players cooperating through a first contact that has not yet happened\, fictional organisms sprouting from a corner\, a hovercraft with its storm shield raised\, a deck of cards asking viewers to remember how things were done somewhere better\, a trashcan resembling a reliquary\, a greenhouse in an arid world and a time machine made from plywood and projections. Rather than presenting a single vision of the future\, these works explore the many ways that the future might be imagined\, constructed and experienced. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition features work from fifteen artists and collectives around the world. Rather than shipping finished physical objects\, the artists transmitted their work as files\, which were then transformed into physical works in Gainesville through processes including 3D printing\, inkjet printing\, projection\, cutting and construction. Some files arrived ready to be printed or played\, while others were developed through months of conversation that transformed a flat drawing into a full-color object that could be experienced in physical space. \n\n\n\nLee frames the exhibition through two ideas: Solarpunk and Cofuturisms. Solarpunk is a hopeful but practical strand of art and design that is less interested in simply imagining future worlds than in building them from technologies that already exist\, emphasizing many small solutions rather than one sweeping answer. Cofuturisms is a broader term for art and writing that understands the future as something made collectively and incorporates perspectives including Afrofuturism and Indigenous Futurisms. \n\n\n\n“A file is not finished\,” Lee said. “It is an instruction\, and someone has to decide how large it is\, what it is made from\, what color it comes out. Those decisions get made in a particular place with particular tools\, which is a reasonable description of how futures arrive anywhere.” \n\n\n\nArtists and collectives represented in “Transmitted Futures” include Saks Afridi\, Morehshin Allahyari\, Nicole Dextras\, Finbarr Fallon\, Jason J Ferguson\, Terence Hannum\, Dustin Jacobus\, Mirabelle Jones\, Golan Levin and Shawn Sims\, Maize Longboat\, Ong Kian Peng\, Kate Paxman\, Saba Qizilbash\, Solarpunk Surf Club and Taryn Walker.

Libby Focus Gallery from September 10 through December 2\, 2026  \n\n\n\nConstance and Linton Grinter Gallery from September 10 through November 12\, 2026. \n\n\n\nThe University Galleries at the University of Florida presents Vico’s Spiral: Half a Century of Artists’ Books curated by Robbin Ami Silverberg and Carole Naggar. The exhibition includes a thoughtful selection of historical and contemporary works\, referential documents and related memorabilia. Originating at the Center for Book Arts in New York in 2024 to celebrate its 50th anniversary\, the exhibition provides a unique opportunity to appreciate\, examine and reflect on the recent history of the artist’s book. It will be on view at the Gary R. Libby Focus Gallery from September 10 – December 2\, 2026 and at the Constance and Linton Grinter Gallery from September 10 – November 12\, 2026. \n\n\n\nThis rich history is covered by presenting a selection of fifty artists’ books\, each of them echoing the unique immanent hybridity of this centuries-old practice\, emblematic for fluently incorporating the contradictions and paradoxes between the new and the old\, the traditional and the experimental\, the radical and the conversative and the political and the aesthetics\, all within one’s own reach. \n\n\n\nThis international global survey presents a broad selection of artists\, including widely recognized artists such as Tauba Auerbach\, Bruno Munari\, John Lathan\, Bruce Nauman and Liliana Porter. According to curator Silverberg\, the exhibition was “curated using the rubric of Vico’s Spiral\, a nonlinear conception of history developed by Giambattista Vico (1668-1744)\, an Italian historian\, political philosopher and jurist credited with founding the philosophy of history. Vico argued that ‘distinct periods of history can have identical or similar general characteristics; therefore\, we can discuss them using an analogy’ and that history’s tendency ‘to repeat itself’ resembled the movement of a spiral or helix. Structured after Vico’s Spiral\, the exhibition pairs books created in different decades yet concerned with similar themes or questions.” \n\n\n\nA comprehensive and fully illustrated\, 256-page catalog was published to accompany the exhibition\, which includes curatorial introductions and thoughtful essays\, revisions of the artists’ books history\, theoretical debates\, a playful list of books defining the field and a well-informed look to the global reach of the practice. It will be available for purchase at UG’s main space for the duration of the exhibition. \n\n\n\nThe artists’ books and the referential documents will be shown at the Gary R. Libby Focus Gallery\, and the second part of the exhibition\, which is focused on various ephemera including posters\, flyers and postcards\, can be seen at the Constance and Linton Grinter Gallery. SUMMARY:Craig Smith: Social Practices (2001-2026)
DESCRIPTION:Opening Reception: September 18\, 2026 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. \n\n\n\nA solo exhibition by Craig Smith is coming to the campus of Santa Fe Community College (Santa Fe Art Gallery) from September 18\, 2026 through October 23\, 2026. The exhibition is entitled: Craig Smith: Social Practices (2001-2026) and includes photography\, sculptures and video documenting twenty-five years of socially engaged artworks and exhibitions in New York\, London\, Pittsburgh\, Beijing and now\, Gainesville.  \n\n\n\nThis exhibition in the Santa Fe College Art Gallery includes videos\, photographs\, and sculptural ‘relics’ from Smith’s individual and collaborative art projects over the last twenty-five years. Each section of the exhibition focuses on a particular element of socially engaged art\, or an art form that\, in part\, utilizes social relations as a formal element in the production of art. The artworks on view in the exhibition include video and photographs produced during public performances on the streets of New York and in the shadows of the World Trade Center just weeks before 9/11. The exhibition also includes large-scale “social sculptures” of art seeking viewer participation in the handling\, curating and exhibition of federally controlled commodities such as firearms. There are also documents of live sound performances by Smith accompanied by New York punk legends the Vores\, collaborations with long-time colleague Colin Beatty\, as well as photographs produced with the New York-based group “C” featuring Smith with artists Lillah Friedland and Matthew Bakkom.  \n\n\n\nCraig Smith is a visual and performing artist whose research and practice explores the foundations of social relations as an agent in cultural production. Smith creates photographs\, videos\, sounds\, and live performances for a wide range of exhibition spaces including museums\, galleries\, athletic facilities\, health care clinics\, and financial institutions. Smith has been included in solo exhibitions and performances across thirteen countries. Smith has been featured at PS1MOMA in New York\, the Tate Modern in London\, the Corcoran Gallery in Washington D.C. and has been featured as an artist and a curator by CEPA Gallery in Buffalo\, one of New York state’s oldest not-for-profit galleries specializing in testing the boundaries of the photographic. Smith’s most recent book of photography is entitled American Ace: Limited Edition (with Ben Wise) and is available from Printed Matter in NYC. His most recent book of theory is entitled Relational Art: A Guided Tour (published by Bloomsbury LLC). Smith has released multiple sound recordings with both Lunacy Records and Legacy 405 (produced by Dave Copenhaver) and has performed these sound pieces live at venues including the Cantor Film Center in New York City and the Central Academy of Fine Art (CAFA) in Beijing\, China. Smith is currently a senior faculty member in the College of the Arts at the University of Florida.

DESCRIPTION:“Dis-located Bodies: The Puppet in the Avant-Garde Imagination”Dr. Nell Andrew\, Professor and Chair of Art History\, University of Georgia \n\n\n\nThis talk explores Dr. Andrew’s current research on the avant-garde’s playful and political mobilization of puppets\, marionettes\, dolls and masks in interwar Europe. Her work aims to expand the objects and methods of art history by focusing on the nature and actions of both material and ephemeral art objects; the sensory systems involved in perception and reception; the concept of abstraction; and the gendered bias of art historical formalism and modernist medium-specificity.The multi-disciplinary nature of Professor Andrew’s research has led her to probe disciplinary assumptions and traditions that separate the study of the arts and humanities.

DESCRIPTION:You are warmly invited to attend our next installation of the Music Studies Colloquium featuring speaker Dr. Benjamin Barson\, who will present on his award winning book\, “Brassroots Democracy: Maroon Ecologies and the Jazz Commons.” \n\n\n\nTalk Abstract: \n\n\n\nThis talk will take my recent book Brassroots Democracy: Maroon Ecologies and the Jazz Commons. As a point of departure to discuss a central animating theme of the book rooted in political economy and human geography. I trace the structural importance and endurance of the plantation complex in the Caribbean and the U.S. South and especially those labor camps marked by the destructive and ecocidal properties of sugar production. I then consider how Black Atlantic music enunciated a counterpoint to these ecologies that challenged the plantation’s organization of land\, labor\, and social life. From the Haitian Revolution through Reconstruction and the emergence of early jazz\, I argue that music did more than register struggles against racial capitalism: it helped produce alternative social and ecological relationships—what I call the jazz commons. \n\n\n\nSpeaker Bio:Benjamin Barson is a composer\, historian\, and musicologist. He is the Samuel L. Williams Endowed Assistant Professor of Music at Bucknell University. His book Brassroots Democracy: Maroon Ecologies and the Jazz Commons (Wesleyan University Press\, 2024)\, is the recipient of several honors\, including the 2025 Robert M. Stevenson Award\, presented by the American Musicological Society. Barson received his PhD in Music from the University of Pittsburgh\, completed a Fulbright Garcia-Robles postdoctoral fellowship at the UABC in Mexicali\, Mexico\, and a Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow at Cornell University’s Africana Studies & Research Center. As a baritone saxophonist\, Barson has performed with luminaries including Fred Ho\, Arturo O’Farrill\, Craig Harris\, and Geri Allen\, and at a wide range of national and international venues\, including the Kennedy Center\, the Guggenheim Museum\, CECUT in Tijuana\, and the Mesopotamian Water Forum – an event organized by ecological activists in northern Iraq’s Kurdistan. He is the winner of the 2018 Johnny Mandel Prize from ASCAP for his composition “Insurrealista.” Barson is also an activist\, and was a cultural organizer in the campaign to free political prisoner and Black power activist Russell Maroon Shoatz. \n\n\n\nBrassroots Democracy book prizes and distinctions: \n\n\n\n– Robert M. Before joining the University of Kentucky\, she was the founding director of the Sturgis Music Academy (now ASO String Academy) of the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra. Dr. Wu earned her Doctor of Music and Master of Music degrees in viola performance from the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University\, studying under Professor Atar Arad. She has also worked closely with Mimi Zweig and Dr. Brenda Brenner as a violin/viola instructor at Indiana University String Academy. Her undergraduate studies culminated in a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from National Taiwan Normal University. \n\n\n\nDr. Wu’s performance experience includes playing with orchestras such as the Lexington Philharmonic\, Arkansas Symphony Orchestra\, Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra\, and Singapore Symphony Orchestra. As a dedicated chamber musician\, she performs extensively with her harp trio\, the Formosa Trio. The trio recently premiered commissioned works by Zhou Tian and Hsieh Tsung Jen at the American Harp Society’s 2023 Summer Institute at Colburn School and gave a recital at the National Taichung Theater in Taiwan. Their performances have also graced the stages of the 13th World Harp Congress in Hong Kong\, the University of Illinois\, Western Illinois University\, Central Michigan University\, Shanghai Concert Hall\, and the National Concert Hall in Taipei. Their album\, “First Impression\,” was released in 2018. \n\n\n\nIn addition to her academic year commitments\, Dr. Wu contributes her expertise during the summer as a faculty member at the Kentucky Governor’s School for the Arts and the Oklahoma Summer Arts Institute. She is an active member of the American String Teachers Association and the American Viola Society\, and she currently serves as the board president for the National String Project Consortium. In recognition of her contributions to music education\, Dr. Wu was honored with the Outstanding Educator Award by the Kentucky Chapter of the American String Teachers Association in 2024. \n\n\n\nA native of Athens\, Georgia\, pianist Jacob Coleman is Associate Professor of Piano and Collaborative Piano at the University of Kentucky School of Music. As a collaborator\, Dr. Coleman has performed with artists such as Franklin Cohen\, David Kim\, Jeff Nelsen\, Leone Busye\, Amy Porter as well as the Zohn Collective and Kenari Quartet. He has served as an official pianist for the Mid-South Flute Fest\, National Trumpet Competition\, ProjetoBone Brasil (2019)\, and Muestra Internacional de Clarinete de Panamá (2019). Coleman has also frequently appeared at the North American Saxophone Alliance and International Double Reed Society conferences. \n\n\n\nPrior to coming to Kentucky Dr. Coleman taught at the University of Southern Mississippi\, where he directed the Collaborative Piano Program and created a new doctoral degree. From 2014-2016\, he served as Visiting Assistant Professor of Collaborative Piano at Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music. For six summers\, he was a member of the piano staff at the Meadowmount School of Music founded by Ivan Galamian. Dr. Coleman holds degrees from The University of Texas at Austin (DMA\, Collaborative Piano)\, University of Oregon (MM\, Collaborative Piano)\, and University of Georgia (BM\, Piano Performance). His primary teachers were Richard Zimdars\, David Riley\, and Anne Epperson.

DESCRIPTION:The School of Art + Art History presents the Visiting Artist Lecture Series. \n\n\n\nJoin us for an artist talk and Q&A with Rachel Mayeri on Tuesday\, October 20 at 6:15 p.m. in Fine Arts B (FAB) 103. \n\n\n\nRachel Mayeri is a Los Angeles-based artist working at the intersection of art and science\, educated at Brown University and University of California\, San Diego. Her videos\, installations and writing projects explore topics ranging from the history of special effects to the human animal. She is known for her multi-year series of artworks about nonhuman primates entitled Primate Cinema. The first\, “Baboons as Friends\,” was created in collaboration with primatologist Deborah Forster and shown at the Mill Valley Film Festival in California\, Abandon Normal Devices in Liverpool and Art Laboratory Berlin. Commissioned by Arts Catalyst\, she designed a film expressly for chimpanzees. The film\, called “Apes as Family\,” subsequently exhibited at Sundance\, Berlinale\, Ars Electronica and Microwave Media Art Festival in Hong Kong. As part of Getty’s 2024 PST Art: Art & Science Collide\, she created a three-channel video installation at the Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institute of Oceanography\, “R/P FLIP R.I.P.\,” about a Cold War research vessel built to rotate 90 degrees. As a Guest Curator of the Museum of Jurassic Technology in Los Angeles\, she designed the permanent kinetic exhibition “Miracles and Disasters in Renaissance and Baroque Theater.”  \n\n\n\nA pioneer in art-science\, Mayeri’s projects are featured in books such as Interspecies: Art\, Science\, and the Animal (2024); The Art-Science Symbiosis (Springer 2024); and The Routledge Companion of Biology in Art and Architecture (2017). She is the recipient of numerous accolades and grants including the Major Arts Award from Wellcome Trust and a Creative Capital Media Grant\, and has held residencies at Djerassi\, Banff New Media Institute and the Mediterranean Institute for Advanced Studies (IMEDEA). She is currently Professor of Media Studies at Harvey Mudd College\, where she teaches courses in Animal Media Studies\, Nonhuman Media Art and Art & Biology.
