Smith is a visual and performing artist who has created exhibitions and live multimedia events in cities across the world. This will be Smith’s first live music performance in Gainesville. Smith will perform songs from his recent album Emerald Cut and other tunes budding with the young energy of urban art rock. \n\n\n\nCraig Smith is a visual and performing artist whose research and practice explores the foundations of social relations as an agent in cultural production. Smith creates photographs\, videos\, sounds\, and live performances for a wide range of exhibition spaces including museums\, galleries\, athletic facilities\, health care clinics\, and financial institutions. Smith has been included in solo exhibitions and performances across thirteen countries. Smith has been featured as PS1MOMA in New York\, the Tate Modern in London\, the Corcoran Gallery in Washington D.C.\, and has been featured as an artist and a curator by CEPA Gallery in Buffalo\, one of New York state’s oldest not-for-profit galleries specializing in testing the boundaries of the photographic. Smith’s most recent book of photography is entitled American Ace: Limited Edition (with Ben Wise) and is available from Printed Matter in NYC. His most recent book of theory is entitled Relational Art: A Guided Tour (published by Bloomsbury LLC). Smith has released multiple sound recordings with both Lunacy Records and Legacy 405 (produced by Dave Copenhaver) and has performed these sound pieces live at venues including the Cantor Film Center in New York City and the Central Academy of Fine Art (CAFA) in Beijing\, China. Through these works\, I explore how femininity and gendered archetypes are performed through digital media\, cinema\, and the history of visual culture. Throughout my work\, I also remix and reference existing imagery from popular culture\, using these visual languages to construct my characters. The works exist in the tension between seduction and abjection\, where femininity is both performed and destabilized\, exposing the constructed nature of idealized beauty.  \n\n\n\nKomal Goswami: My work employs 3D/CG generation\, creative coding\, and digital imaging processes to further investigate “living in the hyphen” culturally and tangibly\, exploring the evolving landscape of human expression\, meaning\, and thought within an increasingly digitally assimilated world. These works emerge from experimentation with the detachment of the self through busts that are 3D-rendered\, 3D-animated\, or digitally replicated. Using my own likeness and animal-based mythic forms as source material\, and referencing both Hindu and Western portrait conventions\, I create abstract self-portraiture and portrait forms that deny autobiography. Instead\, these figures – suspended between portrait\, avatar\, idol\, and simulation – operate as provisional proxies through which identity and embodiment are continuously generated\, processed\, and displaced between the “reel” and the “real” world.  \n\n\n\nThis exhibition will be on view through June 5\, 2026.
