BBC Media Action
Communication – of all kinds – can reach large numbers of people, travel long distances to remote places, and speak many languages, all day and night. Our work with radio, television, digital and social media, mobile phones and face-to-face dialogue can also cross physical, political, economic and social divides. BBC Media Action’s communication projects are rooted in local people’s experiences and understanding. Our extensive research programme – called “world class” by the UK government’s Department for International Development (DFID) – provides insight into audiences’ lives to ensure that our projects reflect their needs and circumstances. We also use our data to monitor how effectively our programmes engage people and stimulate change; lessons learned are then built into future projects. To share our findings and learning as widely as possible, we publish policy and research reports and briefings to inform communication for development practitioners and policy-makers.

We Own TV - Banker White/Anna Fitch/Zach Niles/Alhaji "Black Nature" Kamara
WeOwnTV launched it’s first program in Sierra Leone by facilitating a month-long filmmaking workshop for 18 young men and women just outside the capital city Freetown. For the inaugural class of WeOwnTV: Sierra Leone, workshop participants were selected not based on technical skills or prior experience, but on the enthusiasm, eloquence and sense of purpose each of them exhibited during the interview process. Many participants had never had a camera or touched a computer and many had not finished school, but they each demonstrated an incredible strength and resolve in overcoming tragic circumstances. The aspiring filmmakers came from all areas of the country: the diamond-mining district of Kono, the dusty small town of Makeni (a rebel stronghold during the war) and from the hardscrabble slums of the country’s capital city, Freetown. The group includes ex-combatants, former child prostitutes, street children and physically disabled individuals all of whom showed they have a remarkable gift to give in their creativity. WeOwnTv provides continued technical support, encouragement and training that will allow these young adults to produce media, and share their creative voice with the world.

Band Aid 30
In 1984, Band Aid and Live Aid were formed to help those suffering as a result of the Ethiopian famine. Since then the world has changed dramatically and nowhere more so than in Africa. Across the continent, there has been hugely inspiring and positive change. Poverty is on the decline. Seven of the ten of the fastest growing economies are in Africa. Child mortality rates have decreased significantly, AIDS contagion levels are beginning to recede, and more children - especially girls - are in school than ever before. Yet Ebola has struck parts of West Africa. The World Health Organization has said that the outbreak is "unparalleled in modern times". The UN has recently called for a fivefold increase in government contributions to the fight against Ebola, and more skilled healthworkers are still needed. This is why Band Aid 30 exists.
Framework for Using the Arts for Health Messaging
The framework is based on a set of key findings from studies undertaken by the Center for Arts in Medicine and focused on use of the arts in public health. The findings are derived from a systematic review of literature investigating use of the arts in public health in low-resource and low-literacy regions and studies undertaken, in partnership with Makerere University, in Uganda in 2014. These studies include in-depth interviews with public health leaders and artists working in public health. Our findings align with those of a major systematic review published recently by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, which defines four key components of effective health messaging programs: 1) tailoring the message; 2) targeting messages to audience segments; 3) using narratives; and 4) framing messages.
Hip Co Arts Festival
The International Hipco Arts Festival will be a month long series of workshops on music, visual arts, civic engagement, and business for both established and aspiring artists in Monrovia, Liberia. The workshops will be facilitated by arts industry professionals from the U.S., and will be based around several culminating projects including a music album, a documentary, and a day long performance showcase. The festival is motivated by the desire to support the local arts industry, as well as by the philosophy that arts and culture carry within them the potential to facilitate local pride and a more democratic global society.
Kick Ebola Nar Salone
An approach to try and contain the spread of Ebola, called ‘contact tracing’. This involves identifying who may have come into contact with a confirmed Ebola patient so that they can be isolated and then monitored for symptoms 2-21 incubation period.
Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars
We have launched a fund-and-awareness-raising campaign to end the deadly spread of Ebola in Sierra Leone and other West African nations and we are requesting your help. As you have no doubt heard by now, Ebola -- a flu-like disease that causes internal bleeding and leads to death in up to 90% of patients -- is spreading at an alarming rate in the West African countries of Sierra Leone, Guinea, Liberia, and Nigeria. In an effort to help those in Sierra Leone, where the most cases of Ebola have thus far been reported, the band has teamed up with the Freetown media production team, We Own TV. We Own TV is producing and disseminating vital public service announcements about effective methods of preventing Ebola in Sierra Leone, as the spread has largely been attributed to a lack of awareness of these simple yet vital prevention techniques. Additionally, as Cumbancha Records' Jacob Edgar put it, "people should be made aware that the impact of the Ebola crisis is not only the death of many citizens, but also the serious damage the scare has done to the economies in the countries affected." Even if the virus is able to be controlled, our regional economy will take a long time to bounce back.
Spread Knowledge to Stop Ebola
The idea behind WeOwnTv’s work in Sierra Leone is that no one is more qualified to help Sierra Leone than Sierra Leoneans themselves. WeOwnTV: Sierra Leone aims to build on this spirit of self-reliance as community members, specifically young men and women affected by more than a decade of war, are given the opportunity to create their own stories in their own words. Project participants are encouraged to look within to find their voice. The oral traditions that exist within Sierra Leonean culture has informed the storytelling enabled by newly acquired skills of film and video production.
Stop Ebola Now: Through Creative Storytelling
In partnership with UNICEF Liberia, we are producing a five-episode radio serial drama together with call-in shows. These address the reality of the Ebola epidemic and reflect sensitivity to local cultural values, needs and perceptions of the Liberian audiences. The power of community radio and additional creative forms of communications are being utilized to convey messaging that informs the public on how they can protect themselves, their families, and on how they can help stop the spread of Ebola. Through formats such as drama, songs, music videos and jingles, listeners also gain important information that will help fight myths that currently make reintegration of survivors into their communities a challenge. These dramas and songs also promote the role that survivors can play in relief efforts. We bridge the literacy gap, broadcasting in relevant local languages and dialects to give people the power of information and the confidence that this virus can be contained. Under the mentorship of PCI Media Impact, radio hosts are trained and participating radio stations are provided discussion guides and user kits to ensure that the messages being shared on the airwaves are accurate and up-to-date.

UN Mission for Ebola Response (UNMEER)
The UN Mission for Ebola Emergency Response (UNMEER) is the first-ever UN emergency health mission. UNMEER was established on 19 September 2014 after the unanimous adoption of General Assembly resolution 69/1, and the adoption of Security Council resolution 2177 (2014) on the Ebola outbreak. UNMEER was set up as a temporary measure to meet immediate needs related to the unprecedented fight against Ebola.
