PhD in Music Composition

The PhD in music composition lasts typically four years, consisting of three years of coursework and a year of dissertation. The coursework, listed below, encompasses composition, theory, and musicology courses; the PhD student will also undertake a cognate area outside of composition. Cognate areas of current and previous students have ranged from Musicology to Electrical Engineering to Architecture to Media Studies and beyond.

The dissertation consists of both a composition and a major research document, the topic and scope of which is variable and agreed upon by the student's committee. Each student must pass a written and oral qualification exam before advancing to candidacy, and present a public dissertation defense. (Examples of previous dissertations can be found on the Resources page).

In addition, each student will present a recital of works composed during residency at UF.
