MUC4401: Composition of Electroacoustic Music
MAX Assignment No. 6

The purpose of this assignment is two fold.

    (1) Create and save a four (4) .aiff sound files in ProTools (or any other application with similar capabilities). Using the studio microphone, record the phrase "I don't want to" and then edit the file into four individual files "I," "don't," "want," and "to." Name them with a convention such as "I.aiff" and "don't.aiff".

    (2) Create a MAX patch that will play back these files in order to create the phrases: "I don't want to"; "Don't I want to"; and "I want to". Also, include a method to vary the gap between the playback of each file, individually and globally.

Utilize the following MAX objects to accomplish this assignment (not all are necessary).

      route
      select
      delay
      message
      slider
      expr
      if/then/else
      funbuff
      sfplay~
      dac~

Utilize the Clue Menu (found under the WINDOW menu) to identify the objects available in the palette. Remember that you can use print statements, number boxes, buttons, etc. to debug your patcher. These items will help you track the program flow though the patcher.

BONUS: use the above concept to compose a 60 second musical gesture. These will be performed in class.

We're approaching the end of the semester and your projects needs to start taking shape. Once again, your class assignments should be used as spring-boards in crafting your projects.
