Dr. Erik Shinn commissions new work for trombone

Dr. Erik Shinn has organized a consortium for a new work for solo bass trombone and piano to be completed by the end of the calendar year. The work will be written by Dr. James David, Associate Professor of Composition at Colorado State University.

This sonata is the second installment of Shinn’s Collegiate Commissions Project, which aims to create new literature targeted towards accomplished undergraduate age musicians. For each work, consortiums of trombone educators are organized, this time specifically bass trombonists, who will perform the work at their specific institutions as well as conferences around the country and abroad. In turn, a new work is introduced to a upcoming generation of trombonists.

The first composition, Transmogrify by Dallas composer Christian Paarup, was premiered by the UF Trombone Choir at the 2017 UF International Brass Festival and subsequentially performed by consortium ensembles around the country as well as the International Trombone Festival, American Trombone Workshop, and Texas Music Educators Association Convention.

The consortium for David’s Sonata includes 15 bass trombonist educators from coast to coast, who teach at a variety of institutions including top music conservatories, state universities and liberal arts colleges.
