Art historian examines sixteenth-century textiles

Associate Professor of Art History Maya Stanfield-Mazzi recently visited the new storage facility of George Washington University's Textile Museum in Ashburn, Virginia. There she examined pieces related to her new book project on church textiles of Spanish America. She looked at woven tapestries and painted cotton hangings from Peru's colonial period (1535–1821), recording many elements related to scale, technique, and color that are not visible in photographs.
