Little Kids Rock Modern Band Methods Workshop

  • Date & Time
    • Saturday, February 18, 2017 9:00am to 5:00pm
  • Description

On Saturday, February 18, 2017, dozens of music education majors from the University of Florida and area music teachers will gather to widen the door to music participation for all students and rock out with their peers. To provide current and future music teachers with strategies for creating music programs as diverse as the students that they serve, the university’s music education faculty are hosting a workshop to engage pre- and in-service music educators in new and innovative approaches to teaching music.  This workshop is created by Little Kids Rock, a leading provider of free instruments and music instruction to U.S. public schools.

The University of Florida music education majors are the most recent group of college students to receive professional development from Little Kids Rock. The organization partners with distinguished music education colleges and universities nationwide to prepare future educators with specialized instruction in the methodology of teaching popular music.

The workshop prepares educators to reach and connect with their students through Little Kids Rock’s music program, which teaches kids the popular musical styles of the past 60 years, from rock and reggae to Latin and R&B, among other genres. The method focuses on improvisation, composition and getting kids to immediately play popular instruments such as guitar, piano, bass and drums. The program is part of a burgeoning national movement known as Modern Band and complements existing music classes such as concert band, jazz band, choral ensembles, marching band and orchestra.

    About Little Kids Rock

Little Kids Rock is a national nonprofit dedicated to transforming lives by restoring, expanding, and innovating music education in our schools. The organization partners with public school districts to train teachers to run its innovative Modern Band curriculum, and donates all the accompanying instruments and resources necessary to teach popular music in a way that empowers students to experience instant achievement. What began as a single after-school guitar class has since exploded into a national movement that brings free, weekly music lessons to over 250,000 public school children through the efforts of more than 1,800 teachers in 127 school districts nationwide. To date, Little Kids Rock has served more than 500,000 students. More info at www.littlekidsrock.org.
