Join the Archaeological Institute of America Gainesville Society and the School of Art + Art History for A California Archaeologist Abroad: Native American Legacy Collections in European Museums featuring Dr. John R. Johnson, Curator of Anthropology, Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History, Lecturer in Anthropology, University of California, Santa Barbara.

Early European exploration and later scientific missions to California resulted in some of the best collections of Native material culture from the region.  The historical context of these expeditions sheds light on how these artifacts came to reside in European museums and why their importance is only now becoming appreciated.  A photographic survey of ethnographic collections collected during British, Russian, and French expeditions awakens new appreciation regarding the fine quality, ingenuity, and sophistication of California Indian craftsmanship employed in hunting, gathering, food preparation, adornment, and ceremonial life.
